Product features Ryōgoku no Tora (1860) by Utagawa Hirokage, an Edo-period ukiyo-e artist known for lively, humorous, and sharply observed scenes of urban spectacle. The title translates to “Tiger of Ryōgoku,” referring to one of Edo’s great entertainment districts, where novelty, performance, and public curiosity shaped the city’s visual culture. This composition presents the tiger not as a naturalistic animal study, but as a dramatic imagined beast: wide-eyed, patterned, compressed into the frame, and charged with the theatrical force of something rare and exotic. The clash of spotted hide, red cartouches, sharp claws, and the rooster held beneath its mouth gives the image a strange, almost carnivalesque intensity. Housed in The Metropolitan Museum of Art, presented as part of the Ukiyo-e Collection.
