The painting depicts Joseph Roulin, a postal worker in Arles and one of Van Gogh’s close friends during his time in southern France, seated in his blue uniform with a direct, steady gaze. The deep blues, warm facial tones, and visible painterly handling give the portrait both dignity and emotional immediacy, reflecting Van Gogh’s ability to find character and force in everyday figures. Housed in the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, presented in a refined design as part of the Art Movements Collection.
